BlackBerry Extends Its Signature – Apple & Google

According to recent reports, BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins revealed a new technology keyboard phone that was targeted at the developing world and he also added that the company was going to extend its signature messaging service BBM or BlackBerry Messenger to Android and iPhone devices. During a conference in Florida for all the BlackBerry developers, Heins showed a prototype of the Q5 that is supposed to run on the company’s new BlackBerry 10 operating system. This will be a version that will be slightly lower than the other BlackBerry models and will particularly be targeted at the people who will buy smartphones in the emerging markets and won’t have enough disposable income as the others in the wealthier nations.

Heins said that the device is going to be the 3rd new smartphone in 2013 and will be available in some selected markets like Europe, Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Asia starting in July. The device will arrive with many new features that were included in BlackBerry 10, which will include BlackBerry Hub, Time Shift and not to mention the company’s iconic messaging service, the BBM.

Will the low cost market grow with the new innovation by BlackBerry?

With the invention of the new Q5, the analysts have responded in an optimistic manner. When it comes to the popularity of the low-cost yet high quality smartphones, the Q5 could be a very significant device for BlackBerry company. The technology experts have studied to conclude that the emerging markets make up only 17% of the global smartphone shipments in 2011 but fortunately this figure is predicted to jump to 40% by the end of 2017. The noteworthy aspect of the launch of Q5 will certainly be its price and whether BlackBerry can address the sub $100 smartphone industry.

Extending the internal messaging service to iPhones and Android users

Another good news for the non- BlackBerry users is that they’re making its Messenger service BBM available on Google’s Android platform and Apple’s iPhone, thereby abandoning the platform exclusivity that was the only special tool for attracting users towards BBM. During the company’s developer conference, vice president Andrew Bocking said that this is perhaps the right time for BBM to become a cross-platform mobile service. As BBM has always been one of the most engaging messaging services for all the BlackBerry users, this is being offered to the Apple and Google platforms too.

BBM probably has more than 60 million monthly active users where more than 51 million users use it for more than 90 minutes per day. Once it is approved, this free app will be available for Apple’s iOS 6 software and the devices running with Android OS 4.0 and above. However, with this, there will be a clash with all the other internal messaging services like WhatsApp, WeChat, and Viber. When incorporated with Apple’s iOS, it will be a clash with the company’s own messaging service iMessage app.

BlackBerry also says that the BBM offers the users with high level of privacy and control when it comes to adding anyone to their contact list and how they engage with them. Even the iOS and Android users will be able to add their contacts through PIN, SMS, QR code scan, irrespective of any platform.
