Slowly and gradually, 5-inched smartphones are now becoming a standard amongst the youngsters, breaking the labels of ‘odd-sized’ or ‘not suitable for small hands’ etc. The Lava Iris 500 and XOLO Q1000 are two such smartphones that are equipped with some exciting features for a low price range. In case you are considering one of them as your next smartphone, here’s a quick head-to-head between them.
Display and Platform
Both the Lava Iris 500 and XOLO Q1000 flaunt 5-inch displays engineered with IPS technology to facilitate wide-angle viewing. However, the picture quality offered by both the devices are different as the Iris 500 sports a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels, whereas the XOLO Q1000 flaunts 720 x 1280 pixels (HD) resolution.
While the XOLO Q1000 wins hands down in terms of display, the Iris 500 steals the show when it comes to the software department as it is equipped with Android v4.4 KitKat OS, which is more optimized for running multiple applications simultaneously. On the other hand, the XOLO Q1000 still works on Android JellyBean 4.2 OS which is quite dated now.
The Lava phone is powered by a dual-core processor which is clocked at 1.2GHz, aided by 512MB of RAM. Although the configuration is enough to run Android KitKat smoothly, but the low amount of RAM would certainly pose problems in multitasking. The XOLO Q1000, on the other hand is going to be a delight for heavy users as it packs impressive configuration under the hood. It is fitted with a quad-core MediaTek processor clocked at 1.2GHz, working in tandem with 1GB of RAM.
Cameras and storage
The Iris 500 brings along a 5-megapixel fixed-focus rear shooter with LED flash and support to 720p (HD) video recording. With just a 0.3-megapixel shooter, the device also disappoints when it comes to the front camera. On the contrary, the XOLO Q1000 is equipped with 8-megapixel primary camera equipped with LED flash, autofocus and support to full HD video recording at 30fps. When it comes to the front camera, it gets a 1.2-megapixel snapper, equipped with BSI sensor.
The internal storage capacity in both the devices is 4GB, which using a microSD card can be expanded further upto 32GB. Limited amount of inbuilt storage might cause problems when installing too many apps.
Battery and connectivity
The Lava Iris 500 is offered with 1,800mAh li-ion battery, while the XOLO phone packs a 2,100mAh li-ion battery which according to the company can offer 14 hours of talk time in 2G and 10.5 hours in 3G.
When it comes to connectivity, the Iris 500 is quite a disappointment as it lacks support to 3G networks. The XOLO Q1000 on the other hand is a 3G-enabled handset with a maximum downloading speed of 42.2Mbps and uploading speed of 11.5Mbps. Other regular connectivity options like GPRS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, microUSB are available in both the smartphones.
If you can overlook the limited built-in memory issue, the XOLO Q1000 is a smartphone worth considering within a budget of around Rs 10,000. The Lava Iris 500, on the other hand, comes at around half the price but carries a decent set of specs. The absence of 3G, however, is a serious drawback, and makes the device not-so-suitable if you are planning to have lots of fun on internet with your next smartphone.
